Tampa Trumps Warner In Midweek Contest
TAMPA. Fla. - The University of Tampa men's soccer team made its home debut Wednesday night squaring off against The Warner University Royals at Pepin Stadium. Despite the rainfall and rough field conditions, the Spartans emerged victorious 3-1.
The UT squad saw a continuation of high-powered offense as they've notched seven goals in their last two matches. Scoring for the Spartans was Keith Francisco with two goals and Jake Winship. The first of Francisco's goals came off a penalty kick at the six-minute mark after a foul was issued to Royals keeper David Bartalos.
WU would answer back just four minutes later with a goal thanks in part to Gianluca Cuomo, assisted by Austin Shaner and Sebastian Liscano. Both sides would settle down defensively and would end the half tied at 1-1.
The Second half of action started out much similar to the ending of the first with both sides trying to take advantage of any opening given. Finally in the 73-minute Tampa burst through with the eventual game-winner off the foot of Francisco to catapult his team into the lead. Winship would add the finishing touch to the Spartans' victory as he put away a goal of his own at the 86-minute mark giving UT a 3-1 lead. The third and final goal put any hopes of a Warner come back out of sight and out of mind as the Royals looked deflated after conceding two late goals in the match.
Tampa returns to action on Saturday opening up Sunshine State Conference play against Nova Southeastern. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m., live stats and broadcast will be available for fans to follow all the action at TampaSpartans.TV.
