No. 21 Tampa Extends Win Streak After 1-0 Victory Over Nova Southeastern
After defeating NSU 1-0, the Spartans are off to their best start to a season since 1997
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The University of Tampa Men's soccer team traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Saturday evening to open conference play against the Nova Southeastern University Sharks. The Spartans came away with a 1-0 win over the Sharks as Fredinho Mompremier scored the lone goal of the game in the 9th minute of play. With the victory, Tampa is now off to their best start to a regular season since 1997 with 5 straight wins.
In the first half, UT had the better chances despite NSU having more of the posession as Tampa had four shots on goal while Nova was not able to get any of their six attempts on target. The Spartans would go ahead in the 9th minute as the Sharks were whistled for a foul in the box that gave the visitors a shot from the spot. Fredinho Mompremier stepped up and converted the penalty kick for the only goal of the night and his sixth goal so far this season. After the goal, Tampa was able to hold off a constant attach from the home side as Nova had various opportunities to even the score but would not be able to capitalize on them.
In the second half, the Sharks were once again on the attack as they chased an equalizer. The Tampa defense was up to the challenge and fought to maintain their third straight clean sheet. At one point, the defense blocked three straight shots from NSU and forced the others to go wide of the net.
Overall, Nova Southeastern put 16 shots on the board but only one was on goal and the Sharks were not able to take advantage of having 12 corner kicks either.
After the game, Coach Adrian Bush said about the victory: "I'm very proud of our team tonight. A lot of guts in that performance and a lot of credit to Nova who played a great game."
Tampa will now begin preparations for their game at Rollins on Wednesday, September 21st as they look to continue their winning ways. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
