No. 15 Spartans and No. 22 Tars Draw 3-3 in 2OT
Lewis Sugden and Jason Collister scored for Tampa as the two teams fought for 110 minutes
WINTER PARK, Fla – The University of Tampa men's soccer team was on the road for their second straight game as they traveled to take on Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. The No. 15 Spartans and the No. 22 Tars played 110 minutes but neither side could find a game winner as the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
In the first half, the Spartans and Tars went back and forth, trading goals as well as possession. Tampa struck first as Lewis Sugden scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Fredinho Mompremier and Zack Soufl to put UT up 1-0 in the 6th minute. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as a minute and a half later, Rollins evened the game up at 1-1 as Tosan Popo scored for the home side, assisted by Ray Gerke. The two sides were in a back and forth battle until Jason Collister scored in the 33rd minute to break the deadlock and put Tampa back on top. However, the defense was not able to hold off RC as Matt Volk scored off an assist by Johnny Nartowicz to send the two teams into the break tied at 2-2.
In the second half, it was Rollins that saw most of the possession as they tried to find a goal that would put them in front for the first time in the game. Their work paid off as Popo scored in the 70th minute of play to put his side in front. This was the first deficit that UT had faced so far this season but the team was able to fight back into the game and show their resiliency as ten minutes later Sugden would score his second goal of the night, this time off a free kick, to even the two teams once again on the board.
That would turn out to be the final tally of the night as both teams fought out the rest of regulation and then the twenty minutes of overtime with neither group being able to find the winner that they searched for. Both squads had two shots apiece in the overtime periods and Rollins had three corners but no shots went on target.
The team will be back in action next Wednesday, September 28 as they host Florida Southern. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m. at Pepin Field. Live stats and video stream will be available on Tampaspartans.com
