No. 9 Spartans Conquer Buccaneers in SSC Semifinals

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's soccer team defeated Barry University in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Semifinals. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:  

Final Score: Tampa Spartans 2, Barry Buccaneers 1 

Record: Tampa (13-3-0, 9-1-0 SSC), Barry (7-10-1, 5-5-0 SSC)

Location: Pepin Stadium || Tampa, Fla.  

All-time series: Tampa holds the all-time series record over Barry, leading the series 26-14-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

FIRST HALF: Both teams went back and forth with possession for the majority of the first half. Buccaneers opened the game in the 39th minute, with a header from Toby Fura finding the back of the net off of a cross from Juan Caffaro. The Spartans outshot the Buccaneers 7-2 as they headed into halftime. Score: Barry 1, Tampa 0  

SECOND HALF: The second half started with both teams fighting for possession. In the 57th minute, Travis Foster played a ball across the field and into the Buccaneers box for Amgad Salah. Salah took a touch, settling the ball out of the air, then fired a shot that found the back of the Buccaneers net and tied the game. After more back and forth and a handful of chances from both teams. In the 79th minute, Omar Thali received the ball in the midfield and passed it perfectly between the two Buccaneer center defenders. Juancho Fernandez then ran on to the pass and slid the ball right past the Buccaneers goalkeeper scoring the game-winning goal for the Spartans. Score: Tampa 2, Barry 1 

INSIDE THE STATS:  

  • Spartans outshot the Buccaneers 14-7. 

  • Seven Spartans played the entire 90 minutes. 

  • Seven yellow cards were issued in the match. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans advance to the SSC Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pepin Stadium.
