Pablo Marques Named All-SSC; Yannik Pohlmann Selected as Freshman of the Year
MELBOURNE, Fla. - Thirty-four men's soccer student-athletes are recognized as All-Sunshine State Conference for the 2023 season, including University of Tampa student-athletes Pablo Marques and Yannik Pohlmann as second-team All-SSC and SSC Freshman of the Year, respectively.
Barry University, the SSC Regular Season Champion, boasts 12 award winners, including Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Coaching Staff of the Year. Voting for the awards is conducted among the league's men's soccer coaches.
Marques, a junior forward from João Pessoa, Brazil, earned a spot on the second team in his first full season as a Spartan. Returning following an injury, Marques played in 10 games for the Spartans, ranking second on the team with three goals. He also added an assist while tallying 18 shots, including eight on target. His top performance was a two-goal outing at No. 25 Florida Tech, while his other goal came in the next game against Lynn.
Pohlmann collected Freshman of the Year honors in 2023. The midfielder from Hannover, Germany, started all 15 games for the Spartans during the regular season. He gave his team over 1,000 minutes on the pitch, picking up four points off four assists. Pohlmann is the fourth Tampa athlete to earn SSC Freshman of the Year in men's soccer, the first since 20162.
David Polanco, a forward from Barry, collects Offensive Player of the Year accolades. The junior from Key Biscayne, Florida, led the league in goals (12), goals per game (1.00), points per game (2.08), and game-winning goals (4). In SSC play, Polanco tallied eight goals, including his four game-winners, in just eight games. Polanco becomes the seventh Buccaneer to earn the award, the first since 20181.

Barry's Iker Berruezo is named Defensive Player of the Year. The Garinoain, Spain product led a Buccaneers defense that allowed the fewest goals in SSC play (3) and ended the regular season with eight shutouts. Berruezo led his team with 1,237 minutes played and scored three times, including one game-winner. Berruezo joins Greg Jehs (2002) as the only Buccaneers to be named Defensive Player of the Year in men's soccer.
The Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year awards are presented by College Ave Student Loans.
Rafael Furlani honors Barry as the league's first Goalkeeper of the Year. The junior from São Paulo, Brazil, registered eight shutouts in 13 games. He led the SSC in goals against average (.437) and save percentage (.821). He allowed just five scores in 1,030 minutes in net, leading Barry to the program's 10 wins.
Barry garners the SSC Staff of the Year3 recognition following the program's second consecutive SSC regular-season championship, sixth overall. The Buccaneers' staff, led by head coach Petsa Ivanovic, piloted the program to a 10-4-1 overall record with a 9-1-0 mark in conference play. Barry led SSC play in goals for (25), goals against (3), scoring margin (2.20), and save percentage (.850).
Seven athletes repeat as All-SSC in 2023. Polanco, Berruezo, and Florida Tech's Sjur Drechsler repeat as First Team honorees from 2022.
