Tampa Swimming Sweeps Florida Southern in Opener
LAKELAND, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams opened their 2019-20 season with victories over Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern College on the road.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Men's Final: No. 13 Tampa Spartans 145.5, No. 16 Florida Southern Moccasins 116.5
Women's Final: No. 6 Tampa Spartans 169.5, Florida Southern Moccasins 82.5

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The meet totaled 28 events, including 14 for the men and 14 for the women.
- Tampa's women took first in 13 of the races.
- UT's freshman accounted for five first-place finishes in women's races.
- The Spartan men took six first-place finishes.
- Tampa's women have now won four consecutive dual meets against the rival Mocs.
TOP PERFORMERS (MEN):
- UT took first in the initial men's race, with a time of 3:26.80 from Hugo Bustamante, Brett Saunders, Andre Richardson and Yannick Smith.
- Senior Luke Hene was clocked at 50.88 to win the 100 Back.
- Saunders enjoyed a solid start to his senior campaign as the top performer in the 100 Breast at 58.39. He then won the 200 Breast with a time of 2:09.29 as the Spartans occupied the top three spots in the race.
- A first-place finish was registered by Mikael Haugen in the 100 Free with an effort of 46.56.
- The Spartans concluded the meet with the fastest team in the 200 Free Relay at 1:24.08. Tampa's quartet included Aaron James, Smith, Haugen and freshman Kevin Vu.
TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN):
- The Spartans began the meet with a first place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. A time of 3:55.96 was notched by Courtney Sherwood, Julia Augustsson, Molly O'Hara and Hana van Loock.
- UT took the top four spots in the 1,000 Free as freshman Alexa Turco won the event in 10:42.32. Turco also claimed honors in the 500 Free as she finished in 5:15.66.
- van Loock was the first to finish in the 200 Free, doing so in 1:56.58.
- Augustsson championed the 100 Breast as the freshman was timed at 1:06.73 as the first of three Spartans in the top-three. She would later win the 200 Breast in 2:25.26.
- Another freshman, Carlee Sanchez-Hegarty, won the 200 Fly in 2:10.24.
- Sophomore All-American Elizaveta Bazarova was first in the 50 Free at 24.58. She would win the next race, the 100 Free, in 52.77.
- The 200 Back went to UT's Erin Hixenbaugh in 2:08.88.
- O'Hara was first in the 100 Fly as the Tampa senior was clocked at 58.89.
- In the 400 IM, Emily Pfeifer was the fastest swimmer with a showing of 4:40.91.
- UT finished the race with a first-place finish in the 200 Free Relay. A time of 1:38.24 was achieved by van Loock, Bazarova, O'Hara and Sherwood.
