Spartan Men Move Into First at SSC Championships; Women Remain Second
OCALA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams competed at the second day of the 2024 Sunshine State Conference Swim Championships, with the Spartan men taking the top spot while the women remained second heading to the third day.
Nova Southeastern's women's program took a 65-point lead with a total of 296 points. Tampa was behind the Sharks in second place with 231 points, followed by Lynn, who claimed third place with 151 points.
In the men's standings, Tampa pulled ahead of Nova Southeastern as the Spartans pulled together a cumulative 239 points but were tailed closely by the Sharks in second with 221 points. Florida Southern's men took third place after the second night of action with 179 points.
Day three begins with prelims at 10 am and the finals slated for 6 pm.
CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
Top Performances: As the Sharks put together an impressive team effort, Laura Dekoninck of Lynn was the only individual to nearly break an SSC record as she tied the current SSC women's 50 Yard Freestyle Record with a time of 22.53 in the A Finals of the event. In the 1000 Free, Emily Trieschmann of Nova Southeastern took home gold at 9:45.27. The 200 IM saw Emilia Ronningdal represent the Sharks by claiming first with 2:00.27. The night's final event for the women was led by Lynn's 200 Medley Relay team of Laura Dekoninck, Malaika Schneider, Luna Mertins, and Lexi Lundell, take the gold medal with a time of 1:40.53.)
The men's 1000 Free saw Nova Southeastern's Luca Alessandrini record a gold medal finish at 9:02.87. In the Men's 200 IM, William Slowey swam the fastest time to finish in first at 1:47.19. The men's 50 freestyle then saw Florida Southern's Kyle Micallef take home the top spot on the podium with a time of 19.60, and the night concluded with Florida Southern's men's 200 Medley Relay team of Brandon Wilson, Ludwig Mueller, Nino Viallon, and Kyle Micallef earn the last gold medal of the night with a combined time of 1:26.55.
