NCAA Championships Starts With a Bang as Tampa Wins 800 Free Relay National Championship
GENEVA, Ohio - The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams each placed in the lone event of day one at the 2024 NCAA Division II Swimming Championships at the SPIRE Institute. The Spartan men wasted no time, winning the 800 Free Relay national championship as the women placed 12th in the event.
In the opening race, UT's women competed to a 12th-place effort in the 800 Free Relay. Sierra Gillan, Lindsey Louder, Laura Hodgson and Roma Vrijhof earned 10 points for the Spartans with time of 7:25.76.
The Spartan men outpaced its opponents, capturing the 800 Free Relay national championship in a school and Sunshine State Conference record time of 6:20.78. In addition to being national champions, Caleb Brandon, Parker Knollman, Jacob Hamlin and Santiago Corredor also earned All-American honors for their performances.
This marks the first 800 Free Relay national championship in program history, and the first relay title for the Spartans since 2016. Overall, Tampa has now won four relay national championships.
