Tars Strike Early to Take Game One Against Spartans
Tampa's rally in the 7th falls short as Rollins closed the game out
TAMPA, Fla – The University of Tampa softball team opened their final series of the season with game one against the Rollins College Tars at the Naimoli Family Softball Field on Friday afternoon.
The Tars took game one of the series by a 5-2 final score, scoring all their runs in the first three innings as the Tampa offense was unable to match them.
Tampa now stands at 17-20 on the season and 9-13 in SSC play with two games left in the season. Rollins in the meantime moves to 36-13-1 overall and 16-6 in conference play.
In the circle for UT was senior Alyssa Bache (11-10). Bache tossed the complete game, giving up the five runs in the first three innings and holding Rollins scoreless the rest of the way. For the game, Bache surrendered seven hits, five runs though only four were earned, walked four and struck out five.
Opposite Bache and starting for Rollins was Niki Fogle (24-9). The senior gave up five hits to UT and the two runs in the bottom of the first but shut them out the rest of the way. On the night, Fogle walked two batters and struck out two.
Offensively, Tampa was able to get some offense going in the first inning as they quickly climbed back from being down 1-0 to take the 2-1 lead but were not able to bring any more runs across the rest of the way. In the bottom of the first inning, center fielder Sahrina Cortes got the team going as she drew a walk to begin the inning. She would move over to second on an error by the shortstop that allowed secondbase man Cristina Clauberg to reach first safely. Junior Bre Setree moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt and shortstop Alyssa Colletti would bring the two runs home with two outs as she singled to center field. The Spartans tried to mount a late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as they had runners on first and second with just one out after designated player Taylor Szostak drew a walk and left fielder Savannah Jerkins singled to shortstop but fell short as the next two batters both popped up to first base to end the game.
The Spartans will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they finish their 2016 season with a doubleheader against the Tars. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. In between the two games, the Spartans will also recognize their three seniors on the roster.
