Tampa Defeats Green Bay To Pick Up Third Straight Victory
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa tennis team recorded the program's first victory over an NCAA Division I opponent with a 7-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Spartans improve to 3-10 while the Phoenix drop to 1-11.
In doubles, both the number one and three teams for UT registered come-from-behind victories as the Spartans took all three doubles matches. The number one team of Kourtney Stark and Claire Runge needed a tie-break to win the match as it recorded a 7-4 win in the tie-breaker for a 9-8 triumph.
The number two team of Victoria Bell and Emily Kennedy took and 8-5 victory as the three team of Lindsey Garyn and Megan Mancini won 8-6 while winning the final three games.
In singles, Stark won the number two match with a 7-5 tie-break victory in the second set. Bell had no problem with her number three singles match as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Claire Runge won for Tampa in the four spot. After winning a first set tiebreak with a commanding 7-2 score, Runge won the second set by a 6-3 mark. Mancini also won at number six as she blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
The Spartans travel to Tifton, Ga., where they will play three matches in two days. Tampa will meet Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Saturday at 10 a.m. and then Stillman College at 3 p.m. On Sunday, UT will conclude the trip at 10 a.m. against Albany State University.
