Tampa Tops Eckerd To Notch Second Consecutive Win
TAMPA, Fla. - While hosting a designated USTA Campus Kids' Day, The University of Tampa (2-4) tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over Eckerd College (0-2) in a non-conference meeting between the Sunshine State Conference opponents.
The Spartans held a 2-1 lead following doubles play with the number two and three teams picking up victories. Molly Welsh and Nikol Williams won at two while the team of Lisa Montgomery and Becky Ewing triumphed at three. The scores were 8-3 and 8-2 respectively.
Eckerd took the number one and two singles matches as Tampa had wins from Welsh, Megan Mancini, Ally Wooten and Briana Ryan in the two through six positions. Welsh and Mancini both came through with victories in the third set.
Through the Campus Kids' Day promotion, the local community was encouraged to attend the match at the UT Tennis Complex. Attendance, food, refreshments and promotions were free to those who attended the match.
Campus Kids' Days are designed to expose more junior players (and their parents and coaches) to college tennis varsity team matches. Fans will be encouraged to participate in a variety of promotional activities such as raffles, exhibition matches, fast-serve contests, autograph signings, clinics, etc.
UT returns to the court for a pair of matches later in the week, beginning with a Friday contest at Embry-Riddle. The event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. as the Spartans will play at Florida Tech on 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
