No. 26 Tampa Continues Hot Start With Win Over Ranked Opponent
TAMPA, Fla. - For the first time since 1996, the No. 26 University of Tampa (3-0, 1-0 SSC) tennis team has defeated No. 16 Nova Southeastern University (1-2, 0-1 SSC), recording a 7-2 victory over the Sharks on Saturday.
The Spartans took a pair of doubles matches to grab a 2-1 lead heading to singles action as both the number two and three teams won for the Spartans. Kelsey Matthews and Lindsey Nochowicz won at two by an 8-3 score as the three team of Thashia Garcia and Chloe Pereira took an 8-5 victory.
Garcia also won her number one singles match, topping Alexandra Johansson, who is ranked as the No. 37 player in the nation. Garcia, who is No. 50, won by scores of 6-3, 6-0.
Meg Wladimirski won by a 6-3, 6-0 score at the number-two singles spot as Lauren Hewett and Nochowicz won at the number three and four positions for the Spartans.
Tampa returns to action on Friday when it travels to No. 18 Florida Tech for a 2 p.m., matchup with the Panthers in Melbourne.
