Spartans Continue Momentum of Historic Start
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The No. 26 University of Tampa (4-0, 2-0 SSC) tennis team has pulled off their second upset in a matter of days. The Spartans defeated No. 18 Florida Tech (1-1, 2-1 SSC) on the road by a score of 5-4 marking their second top-20 upset of the young season.
Following last week's performance over Nova Southeastern, the Spartans went on to take two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Number one doubles team Lauren Hewett and Meg Wladimirski redeemed themselves from last week's doubles loss, winning 8-4. Number two doubles team Lindsay Nochowicz and Kelsey Matthews continued their winning streak with a commanding score 8-1. Thashia Garcia and Chloe Pereira played number three doubles and narrowly lost 9-7.
In singles, Wladimirski breezed through her number two singles match winning 6-4, 6-1 over Stephanie Dohner. Freshman Nochowicz would also go on to win with ease defeating Charlotte Fahnehjeim 6-3, 6-1.
At four wins apiece, sophomore transfer Kelsey Matthews and Katie Close were the final and deciding match on court. For the second time in days after winning the deciding match against the Sharks, Matthews showed poise and composure and came out on top winning the match 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Tampa returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m., when it travels to a neutral site location for a matchup against Flagler College in Orlando.
