Thashia Garcia Records “Golden Set” to Pace Spartans on Senior Day
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 14 University of Tampa (15-4, 3-4 SSC) tennis team celebrated senior day with an 8-1 victory over Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd College (2-9, 0-6) on Friday at the Naimoli and Young Complex.
Number-one singles player and national No. 40 Thashia Garcia registered a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Gipson Hawn. In the match, Garcia allowed no points in the second set to record a "golden set."
The Spartans took all six singles matches, as Meg Wladimirski, Lauren Hewett, Lindsay Nochowicz, Kelsey Matthews and Chloe Pereira each won their respective matches.
In doubles, the number-one team of Lauren Hewett and Meg Wladimirski, ranked No. 25 in the nation, won by an 8-0 score. They were joined in the victory column by the two-doubles duo of Kelsey Matthews and Lindsay Nochowicz.
Prior to the match, seniors Nikol Williams and Becky Ewing were honored by head coach Al DuFaux and teammates. Both players are four-year letterwinners on track to graduate this spring.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday at home in their final regular season match. UT will host No. 2 and undefeated Barry University (18-0) in an SSC match.
