Tampa Tennis Sweeps Shorthanded Georgia College

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans tennis team improves to a .500 record on the season with a convincing victory against the Georgia College Bobcats on Sunday, March 1.

Team Records: The University of Tampa: 4-4 (0-3 SSC),  Georgia College: 0-5 (0-1 PBC)

How it Happened:

• Junior Emily Pope was out for Georgia College. The Bobcats only carry six players on their entire roster, which is the total amount required for an NCAA DII match. The absence of Pope forced Georgia College to lose three doubles and six singles via automatic forfeit. Tampa began the match up 1-0, placing the Bobcats in an instant hole.

• Ekaterina Grib and Savannah Williams avenged their loss from Saturday with a 6-3 victory over Emma Fleming and Jordan Bowie. Since the Spartans only needed one additional doubles win, their victory clinched doubles, putting Tampa up 2-0.

• Corbin Dorsey and Tatiana Harrelson won in two doubles 7-6 (9-7) to sweep doubles.

• Singles matches finished in numerical court order one to five, with #1 Ekaterina Grib winning first, #3 Lilley Nice clinching the match, and #5 Tatiana Harrelson confirming the sweep.

• Grib defeated the Bobcat's Kim Yatribi 6-0, 6-2. The first set was the only set of the afternoon where a Spartan did not lose a single game.

• Harrelson won her first career singles match 6-3, 6-3. The freshman from Myrtle Beach has a very bright future for the Spartans program in a group of seven underclassmen.

• Tampa is 2-0 in neutral site matchups and have three neutral matches from 3/12 - 3/14.

Up Next: Tampa tennis returns home on Thursday, March 5, to take on Saginaw Valley State University. The Spartans are 2-1 all time against Saginaw Valley. UT defeated SVSU last time out 7-0 on March 7, 2019, in Tampa. The Cardinals are 4-9 this season (2019-2020), having only played one match in 2020, falling to Hillsdale 7-0.
