Raquel Amaro Selected to Play at Billie Jean King Cup
LONDON - University of Tampa tennis student-athlete Raquel Amaro has been chosen to represent her home country of Venezuela at the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup.
Also known as The World Cup of Tennis, Amaro will compete on July 24-29 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in the Americas II Group. The event will be played at Centro Nacional De Tenis Parque Del Este.
Amaro, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, concluded her collegiate eligibility for the Spartans in 2023 as the team's top singles player, and part of the top doubles duo. She would finish the season with a record of 13-5 in both singles and doubles.
She would become a first-team All-Sunshine State Conference selection, becoming the first player in program history to make the first team. Also recognized nationally, she was ranked all season, reaching the No. 13 spot in week five. Amaro ended the year at No. 26 in singles and No. 23 in doubles with partner Victoria Sanchez.
Amaro becomes the first UT player to play pro since Judy Alvarez played at Wimbledon in 1964.
Launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the name was changed to the Fed Cup in 1995, and changed again in September 2020 in honor of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King.
The Billie Jean King Cup is the world's largest annual women's international team sports competition in terms of the number of nations that compete.
