Tampa Tennis Falls To FSC In Lakeland
Lakeland, Fla- The University of Tampa's Women's Tennis team hit the road this afternoon for a Sunshine State Conference battle with nearby Florida Southern College. After a big win on Wednesday, the Spartans were looking to continue building positive momentum as the tennis season starts to heat up. In what was another uphill battle, Tampa continues to show flashes of a top ranked team.
Final: Florida Southern College Mocs 5, University of Tampa Spartans 2,
Location: Wynee Warden Tennis Center | Lakeland, Fla.
Records: Tampa (2-7), Florida Southern (10-2)
History: This was the 76th time these two programs have faced off, Tampa is behind in the all-time series 6-68-2.
How it Happened:
In a match where every point was hard earned, Tampa was a few bounces away from the upset. To begin doubles play, Tampa got off to a great start and held leads on two courts. This was until Florida Southern finally started playing to their strengths to end up with the doubles sweep. Despite the doubles loss, the pairs of Cierniak/Sanchez and Sundling/Axelsson performed well but came up just short. The two courts were separated by just three points as Cierniak/Sanchez fell 6-5 and Sundling/Axelsson lost 6-4 to their Moc counterparts. As the match transitioned to singles play, Tampa knew they needed to play perfect in order to climb out of the 1-0 hole. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the first sets of singles play did not fall their way. While Victoria Sanchez was able to grind out a 7-6 win, the Mocs took the rest of the slate and were now just 3 set wins from a match victory. Florida Southern went on to grab those three points plus another one to take the match. Sanchez went on to pick up a point for the Spartans after blanking her opponent in the second set 6-0. Ida Axelsson battled for three sets for the Spartans second point of the day but it would not be enough. Florida Southern came out victorious in the end but Tampa can take the momentum they gained into their next matches.
