#2 Tampa Downs Barry in Three Games on Senior Day
Tampa, Fla. - The second-ranked University of Tampa volleyball team registered a 3-0 victory over Sunshine State Conference rival Barry on Senior Day. The Spartans improve to 27-1 on the season and 13-1 in the SSC as they also stretched their home winning streak to 31 matches, four shy of the school record.
Tampa came out swinging in game one, recording a 30-22 win while hitting .385 for the game. The Spartans eventually pulled away, leading by as many as 10 points (28-10) in the initial game. Tampa won game two by a score of 30-20 and never trailed in the game after getting off to a 4-0 lead. The third game was a back-and-forth battle before Tampa eventually took a 20-15 lead that they held for a 30-25 win while holding the Buccaneers to a .079 hitting percentage in the game.
Alisha Green and Katelen Dixon led Tampa with 13 kills apiece and were joined by Stephanie Rivera (12) in double figures. Green was 13-17 with a .765 hitting percentage as all three posted attack percentages above .400. Gabriela Saade had a team-high 48 assists and two service aces as Green paced the Spartans with four blocks.
Prior to the match, 2006 seniors Amy Rumore, Tarah Marinelli and Stephanie Rivera were honored as the three seniors while Rivera and Dixon were recognized for surpassing the 1,000 kill plateau. Elise Marinelli was also presented with an honorary letter for her contributions to the volleyball program.
The Spartans now have two regular season matches remaining as their next match is at home against eighth-ranked Florida Southern on Friday, November 3 at 7:00 pm. The matchup between longtime SSC rivals will have playoff implications as both teams sit atop the NCAA South Regional poll and stand one-two in the SSC rankings.
