TAMPA, Fla.- The fifth-ranked University of Tampa volleyball team defeated Minnesota State University-Mankato 3-1 in the Tampa Classic to stay perfect on the season. UT improves to 4-0 while MSU-Mankato drops to 2-4.
The Spartans won the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-20 before dropping the third set 25-21. They bounced back in the fourth set to win 25-21.
The Spartan offense was led by seniors Annalea Warren and Danielle MacDonald with 11 kills each. Sophomore Melissa Vanderhall recorded nine kills and Sam Macks had six.
Starting libero Camila Saade led the team in digs with 13, while Warren added 10 and Vanderhall nine. Freshmen Brianne Yeates and Camille Hanks led the team with two blocks a piece.
UT hit just .234 for the match, while Mankato hit .159. Each team had its share of hitting errors as the Spartans had 21 compared to 22 for the Mavericks.
Tampa plays two matches Saturday in the Tampa Classic, starting with Colorado State University-Pueblo at 1:00 pm, and then Ferris State University at 7:00 pm.
