
#5 Spartans Clinch 7th SSC Championship With Win Against FIT
TAMPA, Fla. - With a quick three set victory, the No. 5 University of Tampa volleyball team clinched at least co-ownership of the 2011 Sunshine State Conference Championship with their win over Florida Tech. The Spartans reach a 28-1 record with a 14-1 SSC mark while the visiting Panthers drop to 6-22 with a 2-12 conference tally.
Freshman Meagan Burke swung a blistering 11-for-12 while committing zero errors. The dominant showing gives the Jacksonville native a career high .917 attack percentage, also notching two blocks.
Junior Jessica Yingling followed closely behind with 10 kills for the UT squad while phenom Danielle Selkridge continued her tear with a perfect 6-for-6 showing. The tandem blocked two and three Panther attacks respectively while Yingling served a pair of aces on the three-set win.
Senior right side Brianne Yeates smacked six kills while committing no errors while Camille Hanks swatted four in errorless fashion. The team swung at a .409 clip while limiting FIT to a .185 showing.
Tampa took the first set by a 25-12 margin as Selkridge and Yingling totaled nine kills in 13 swings. Seniors Eva Dupay and Julie Howlett picked up four digs apiece as the Panthers hit .000 in the premier stanza.
Burke sizzled in the second set as she killed six in as many chances while blocking two en route to a 25-15 win.
The Burke performance continued in the third frame as the freshman hit a near perfect 5-for-6 in the 25-21 win. Yeates and Yingling grounded three kills each as the Spartans clinched their seventh straight SSC Championship.
The Spartans hit the road to play their final regular season game against tough conference foe Rollins College Wednesday with a 7 p.m. start time. The Spartans clinch sole ownership of the SSC Championship with a win as Eckerd College looks to tie Tampa at the top of the standings.
