
Tampa Takes Care of Business in SSC Opener at Rollins
WINTER PARK, Fla. - No. 7 University of Tampa (8-2, 1-0 SSC) volleyball team defeated Rollins College (6-6, 0-1 SSC) in three sets in its Sunshine State Conference opener.
The Spartans traveled to Rollins and performed efficiently, winning three straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-14.
Seniors Jessica Yingling and Danielle Selkridge paced the Spartans with 12 kills apiece, contributing to the 49 total kills on the night. Equally effective was the UT defense, which totaled nine blocks and 72 digs.
Tampa displayed outstanding defense right from the opening set, leading to a 25-13 win. Three solo blocks and 17 total digs held Rollins to a .059 attack percentage. Freshman Jen Scholz, a Winter Park High School graduate playing in front of her hometown fans, led the Spartans with five digs in the opening set. On the offensive side, the attacks were evenly distributed, with four Spartans recording three-or-more kills.
The second set was dominated by middle blocker Selkridge and outside hitter Yingling, as they led UT to a 25-19 victory. Selkridge connected for six kills on eight swings, posting an outstanding .625 kill percentage. Fellow senior Yingling added five kills respectively on the set, while also contributing seven digs on defense. Reliable setter Kahley Patrick recorded 14 assists on the set.
Tampa continued its superb play into the third set and defeated Rollins 25-14. Junior Holly Reschke completed her productive night with 11 kills. The Spartans as a team connected for 16 kills on 45 total attacks in the third set. Outside hitter Jackie Neff and middle blocker Meagan Burke added seven and six kills respectively to finish off the Tars of Rollins.
Tampa will return to action on Saturday in another Sunshine State Conference road contest, at Florida Tech. The match is slated for 4 p.m., in Melbourne, Fla. Live stats and a webcast will be available through TampaSpartans.com.
