Knight-Time Story Features Tampa Victory
BOCA RATON, Fla. - There was no debating the outcome for Lynn as the No. 5 University of Tampa volleyball team continues to ravage its Sunshine State Conference opponents with a win over Lynn University in a 3-1 decision.
The Spartans move to 12-2 on the season with a 5-0 mark in SSC play while the Fighting Knights drop to 10-5 with a 2-3 tally in conference matchups.
A dominating performance from Danielle Selkridge, partnered with career high showing from sophomore Jackie Neff gave the Tampa squad the decisive edge. Selkridge notched an errorless 14 kills at a sizzling .636 hitting percentage while Neff tallied 12 kills at an even .500 clip.
Middle blocker Meagan Burke grounded seven attacks in 10 swings, good for a team leading .700 attack while outside hitter Holly Reschke posted 13. Jessica Yingling impressed with seven kills, five digs, two blocks and four service aces to provide multiple weapons for the No. 5 team.
The defense was led by libero Jen Scholz who had 13 digs in the four set win. Juniors Frances Cardenas and Kendall Putnam dug out eight and seven LU attacks respectively. Blockers Selkridge and Burke stopped two apiece to round out the Spartan defense.
Tampa toppled the home squad in the premier set, winning by a 25-12 margin over the Fighting Knights. Senior Yingling hit to the tune of a .500 attack percentage, grounding five kills in the frame. A trio of defenders posted five digs each in Putnam, Cardenas and libero Scholz. Setter Kahley Patrick spun 14 assists in the first set of play.
Lynn garnered a second set victory despite an errorless five-kill performance from Selkridge. The Fighting Knights broke the Spartan's consecutive set win streak at 15 straight with the 21-25 drop.
The UT squad returned to form in the third stanza as Selkridge continues to dazzle, posting another errorless frame with four kills. Scholz turned a six dig third as Tampa took the set 25-15.
Yingling served up three consecutive service aces in the fourth set to lock-up a 25-18 win.
The Tampa team continues its road trip, heading to the Shark Tank to face Nova Southeastern University for a Saturday matinee, slated for a 4 p.m. start.
