SSC Announces Volleyball Awards as Danielle Selkridge Claims Second Straight Major Honor
ORLANDO, Fla. - A total of 24 student-athletes have earned recognition on the 2012 All-Sunshine State Conference Volleyball Team. Tampa's Danielle Selkridge was selected Player of the Year, while her coach, Chris Catanach, was named Coach of the Year.
In addition to Selkridge and Catanach, Florida Southern's Kayshia Brady was named Freshman and Newcomer of the Year as the other major award winner.
Named All-SSC First Team along with Selkridge were: OH Lindsay Biggs (Eckerd), MB Camille Indest (Rollins), L Angie Lassman (Florida Tech), OH Ali McAlvany (Eckerd), OH Holly Reschke (Tampa), and S Ali Skayhan (Florida Southern).
Earning All-SSC Second Team recognition were: MH Meagan Burke (Tampa), MB Brianna Cox (Lynn), OH Megan Hodges (Rollins), L Kaleigh Humphrey (Eckerd), S Kahley Patrick (Tampa), OH Anne Pietkiewicz (Florida Southern), and OH Kate Stromberg (Florida Southern).
Three student-athletes received honorable mention. They were: S Mima Hajdukovic (Barry), MB Sami Vierk (Saint Leo), and OH Jessica Yingling (Tampa).
An All-Newcomer Team was also selected. Named to that squad with Newcomer and Freshman of the Year Brady were: OH Ashley Carrero (Barry), MB/RS Laine Cielena (Barry), OH Sydney Cook (Nova Southeastern), S April Jackson (Rollins), S Emily Schadow (Eckerd), and MB Sami Vierk (Saint Leo).
Voting for the All-SSC Volleyball Team was conducted among the league's head volleyball coaches.
A senior from Tortola, Virgin Islands, Selkridge wins SSC Player of the Year Honors for the second straight season. She averaged 3.57 kills per set, which ranked second among SSC players. Her .503 attack percentage was not only tops in the SSC but also led all NCAA Division II players. She also ranked fifth in the league with 0.98 blocks per frame. Selkridge earned SSC Player of the Week honors five times this fall and was twice named AVCA National Player of the Week for Division II.
Catanach wins his 16th SSC Volleyball Coach of the Year award after leading Tampa to the conference title with a perfect 16-0 league mark. Boasting a 27-3 overall record, the Spartans have won at least a share of the past eight SSC titles. On Nov. 14, Catanach led his Spartans to a five-set win over Eckerd, which not only secured the league crown but also gave the skipper his 900th career coaching victory. He ranks second among active DII coaches in career wins. Currently ranked No. 7 in the nation, Tampa has been ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll top-10 all season.
In her debut season out of Crescent City, Fla., Brady averaged 2.08 kills and 0.61 blocks for Florida Southern. She ranked second on the Moccasin squad in blocks. Brady's .336 attack percentage was fourth among SSC players.
