TAMPA, Fla. - University of Tampa volleyball coach Chris Catanach has announced the addition of Berkley Whaley, who transferred after playing her freshman season at the University of Florida.
"We are excited that Berkley Whaley has decided to be a student-athlete at the University of Tampa," says head coach Chris Catanach. " She is not only an outstanding athlete and volleyball player, but she is an even better person. Berkley will be an outstanding representative for our volleyball program and university."
A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Whaley has enrolled in classes at UT and will participate in the spring with the Spartans. She is also a graduate of Lakewood High School and played at the club level with current UT standouts Kahley Patrick and Marissa Lisenbee.
Whaley recently completed a fall season where she played in 19 matches, starting 10 for the Gators as a true freshman. She finished the year with 67 kills, seven service aces, 32 digs and 14 blocks.
An AAU All-American for the Pinellas Heat, Whaley helped the club to a national runners-up performance at the 2010 AAU Nationals. She was named to the national all-tournament team at Junior Olympic Nationals in 2011 and was tabbed the St. Pete Times' Pinellas County Player of the Year and a finalist for PrepVolleyball.com's National Sophomore of the Year, both in 2009.
She was ranked No. 11 on PrepVolleyball.com's list of Senior Aces and a two-time member of the USA Select A1 team (2008, 2009). Whaley was also named to PrepVolleyball.com's Frosh 59 and Soph 79 lists and was second team all-Pinellas County as a freshman
Prior to transferring to UT, she began her collegiate career in January 2012 as an early enrollee to UF.
