UT’s Whaley and Wagner Sweep Volleyball Players of the Week
WINTER PARK, Fla. - Tampa's Berkley Whaley and Jessica Wagner have been selected Sunshine State Conference Volleyball Players of the Week presented by VALIC.
Whaley, a sophomore outside hitter from St. Petersburg, Fla., led the No. 2 Spartans to a 2-0 week in pivotal SSC matches against Eckerd and Saint Leo to clinch at least a share of the 2013 SSC Volleyball Championship. Whaley averaged 4.62 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .298, while also recording four service aces. Against Eckerd, she was one dig away from a double-double with 21 kills and nine digs. Whaley also recorded five blocks in the victory. Against Saint Leo, she recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs.
Wagner, a sophomore middle blocker from Cape Coral, Fla., repeats as defensive player of the week after averaging 1.75 blocks per set. The sophomore recorded 14 of No. 2 Tampa's 22 blocks over the weekend, including eight against Eckerd and six against Saint Leo. Wagner also hit over .300 to lead the Spartans to a share of the 2013 SSC Volleyball Championship.
With four SSC matches remaining, UT has already clinched at least a share of its ninth straight and 23rd overall league championship. The Spartans are now four games ahead of second-place Florida Southern.
Tampa continues its dominance in the weekly SSC volleyball award, as the Spartans now have a total of 10 Players of the Week. Whaley earned the honor for the fourth time, as Wagner and fellow middle blocker Meagan Burke now have three weekly accolades.
