Tampa Takes SSC Outright with Win Over Rollins
TAMPA, Fla. - Earning sole possession of the 2013 Sunshine State Conference Championship, the No. 2 University of Tampa volleyball team swept visiting Rollins College 3-0 Wednesday evening (25-18, 25-21, and 25-20).
The Spartans improve to 26-1 on their 2013 campaign with a perfect 13-0 in conference while the Tars dip to 20-8 with a 7-6 SSC tally.
Tampa has earned its 23rd conference championship and has claimed that spot for nine consecutive seasons. The UT squad has continued its school record 32 straight conference victories dating back to Oct. 29th, 2011.
SSC player of the week Berkley Whaley dominated the Tars with an errorless 21 kill showing, averaging an astounding seven kills per set. The outside hitter swung at a blazing .538 attack percentage and her 24.5 points (three sets) ranks second all-time in UT volleyball history. The St. Petersburg, Fla. native notched four digs, three blocks and two service aces in the sweep.
Setter Kahley Patrick paced the Spartans to a team .306 attack percentage, picking up 40 assists. The junior posted a double-double with 11 digs in addition to a block and a service ace while outside hitter Megan Heffron tallied three service aces to her credit.
Defensive duo Jen Scholz and Frances Cardenas picked up 12 and nine digs respectively. Sophomore Marissa Lisenbee tallied a team-leading five blocks in addition to four kills for Tampa.
Rollins was led offensively by Camille Indest, as the senior amassed 11 kills for the Tars but were unable to gain traction in the Spartan triumph.
Tampa will look to continue its SSC streak as it welcomes rival Florida Southern College on Senior Day. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. Saturday with a special presentation to the Spartan seniors as the play in their last regular-season home match.
