Volleyball to Honor Seniors in Rival Showdown
TAMPA, Fla. - Hosting its last regular season match, the No. 2 University of Tampa volleyball team will honor its seniors as it plays rival Florida Southern College Saturday afternoon. The match will be played at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center at 4 p.m. with a short ceremony to honor the contributions of its seniors.
UT will honor four players and two assistant coaches for their years of dedication to the program as players Kim Amerell, Frances Cardenas, Kendall Putnam and Holly Reschke will play in their last regular season home match. Assistant coaches Ryan Love and Kaylee Koetter will also be honored for their efforts under the leadership of head coach Chris Catanach and associate head coach Jeff Lamm.
The Spartans enter the match with sole possession of the Sunshine State Conference crown, owning a pristine 13-0 conference tally, 26-1 overall. In addition to the conference title, UT continues its longest active SSC win streak, taking 32 consecutive conference matches dating back to Oct. 29th 2011.
Tampa swept Rollins College in its midweek matchup as Berkley Whaley unloaded on the Tars. The sophomore blasted 21 kills in the victory and her 24.5 point performance (three sets) ranks second all-time among Spartan volleyball players. The outside hitter contributed four digs, three blocks and two service aces while swinging a blistering .538 attack percentage in her errorless onslaught.
The Moccasins enter the match 19-11 on the season with an 8-4 record in conference. FSC dropped its previous matchup in five-set fashion to foe Flagler College. Outside hitter Kate Stromberg spun a double-double for the Mocs, posting 15 kills and 19 digs. Freshman Brindl Langley followed suit with a double-double showing of her own, amassing 11 kills and 15 digs.
Tampa owns the all-time series by a slim 64-56 margin including a three set sweep earlier in the season. Live stats as well as a live video webcast will be made available through www.tampaspartans.tv.
