Daktronics Names Berkley Whaley as South Region Player of the Year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Daktronics All-South Region Volleyball Teams were announced on Tuesday, with the University of Tampa placing five student-athletes on the team. Berkley Whaley was also named the South Region Player of the Year.
The Spartans had three players on the first team as Whaley was joined by middle blockers Meagan Burke and Jessica Wagner. Kahley Patrick and Marissa Lisenbee earned second-team honors.
Whaley, a sophomore outside hitter St. Petersburg, Fla., was also named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year in her first season as a Spartan. She is the team leader with 365 kills while hitting at a .299 clip. She also ranked first on the squad with 49 service aces, second with 239 digs and fourth with 71 total blocks.
Burke, a junior middle blocker from Jacksonville, Fla., is hitting .439 with 88 total blocks. Wagner, a sophomore middle blocker from Cape Coral, Fla., has turned in a team-leading 136 blocks while hitting .304.
Patrick, a junior setter from Clearwater, Fla., has 865 assists to lead the team. She also has 29 service aces and 226 digs. Lisenbee, a sophomore rightside hitter from Seminole, Fla., owns a .351 hitting percentage with 73 blocks.
All first-team selections will be also be considered for All-American honors. Voting for Daktronics is conducted by Sports Information Directors. As the region player of the year, Whaley will also appear on the ballot for National Player of the Year honors.
