Golden Bears End Spartan’s Run in NCAA Quarterfinals
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The No. 1 University of Tampa volleyball team saw its 2013 season come to a close at the hands of familiar foe in No. 3 Concordia University, St. Paul 3-1. Concordia took the match by set scores of 18-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22.
The Golden Bears continue on to the NCAA Division II Semifinals with a 33-3 record while the Spartans end their campaign 32-2.
The UT squad's only losses this season came against Concordia and the team has been eliminated in four consecutive postseason matchups against the six-time reigning national champs.
Sophomore standout Berkley Whaley had a phenomenal game despite the outcome, grounding a match-best 19 kills while fellow sophomore Jessica Wagner reached double-digits with 11 kills.
Setter Kahley Patrick amassed 41 assists to go along with 10 digs for a double-double showing as libero Jen Scholz picked up 12 digs.
The balanced offense of the Golden Bears was no match for Tampa, as a trio of CU players reached double-digits. Senior All-American setter Amanda Konetchy paced the team to a .350 hitting mark with 48 assists. Right side Kayla Koenecke led her team with 14 kills in her final season of play.
Tampa ends its season 32-2 as Concordia continues on to the semifinal round.
