TAMPA, Fla. - Wrapping up Sunshine State
Conference weekend action, the No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans
(10-1, 3-0 SSC) defeated the visiting Florida Southern College
Moccasins (7-4, 3-1 SSC) by a 3-1 score (25-22, 15-25, 25-20,
25-12) Saturday afternoon from the Martinez Center.
The win marks the Spartans' 39th consecutive Sunshine State
Conference victory since 2011, a school and conference
record.
In the first two sets of the afternoon, the visiting Moccasins
immediately captured an early lead, forcing the Spartans to build
momentum and come from behind. In the second set, the Mocs pulled
far enough ahead to record a 25-15 set victory. Until Saturday,
Tampa had not lost a set since Sept. 13 against then-No. 4
BYU-Hawaii.
After a short intermission, the Spartans returned to the court
in set three and rallied for a 25-20 set victory. With the score
and momentum in their favor, Tampa jumpstarted the fourth set with
seven-straight points, garnering an early lead and cruising to a
25-12 set victory. The triumph propels the Spartans to a 10-1
regular season overall record.
Four Spartans recorded double-digit kills in the victory, with
junior All-American Berkley Whaley notching 20 to lead the way.
Junior Marissa Lisenbee added 11 to the team's 60 total kills,
while senior Meagan Burke and junior Jessica Wagner collected ten
each.
Freshman Molly McAlvany, who donned the libero uniform for
sets three and four, led Tampa with 12 digs on the afternoon.
Whaley nearly matched her dig for dig with 11 of her own.
Senior setter Kahley Patrick propelled the Tampa offense to
victory on the afternoon, recording 50 assists to match her 2014
season-high.
The Spartans will travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. on Wednesday,
October 1 for a midweek SSC matchup against Eckerd College before
returning home Friday and Saturday for SSC contests against Lynn
and Florida Tech. Wednesday night's match is set for 7:00
