National Champions Place Three on Academic All-American Team
AUSTIN, Texas - The national champion
University of Tampa volleyball team received more good news as a
record three student-athletes were named to the Capital One
Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team as selected
by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA).
Berkley Whaley becomes the 10th player in UT history to be
named a first-team Academic All-American, and the first volleyball
player since Cathy Fox in 1986. Meagan Burke was named a
second-team All-American, as she has now been named an Academic
All-American a school-record three times. Burke's accolades include
two volleyball selections and one in softball. Kahley Patrick was
also named a third-team Academic All-American, making the three
selections a school record.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program
is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national
governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards
fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division II Academic
All-America® teams program.
Twelve of the 18 members of the 2014 Capital One Academic
All-America® Division II volleyball teams have at least a 3.90
GPA, with five student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 18
Capital One Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team
members have an average GPA of 3.90.
Whaley, the 2014 AVCA National Player of the Year, has a 3.75
GPA while majoring in advertising and public relations. She was
also honored as both the Sunshine State Conference and Daktronics
South Region Player of the Year. The junior from St. Petersburg,
Fla., is a two-time first-team All-American.
Burke is one of three members of this year's team to be a
repeat performer, as the holds a 3.53 G.P.A. with an allied
health/medical science major. On the court, she is also a 2014
Daktronics® first team All-American selection. Burke is a
three-time AVCA All-South Region selection and a two-time
All-American. She entered the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II
Volleyball Championship as the national leader in attack percentage
(.439). A two-sport standout for the Spartans, she is also a
Capital One Academic All-America® in softball.
Patrick, a four-year starting setter, helped the Spartans to
this season's national championship while also being an
All-American on the court. She currently owns a 3.74 GPA while
majoring in elementary education. She was among national leaders in
assists, and also ranks as one of the best setters in program
history for the Spartans.
Nine of the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA
Division II volleyball team members represent squads which
qualified for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship.
National champion Tampa has three student-athletes on the 2014
Academic All-America® teams with one selection on each of the
first, second and third teams.
