Tampa Volleyball Opens 2017 Season 1-1

After the first day of the Terrace Hotel Classic, Tampa Volleyball begins their 2017 season 1-1.

TAMPA, Fla. – Concluding day one of the Terrace Hotel Classic, the No. 17 University of Tampa volleyball team split on their first day of action at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
 
The Spartans defeated the University of New Haven 3-0, before falling to the Central Washington University in similar 3-0 fashion.  UT started the weekend tournament with a 1-1 overall record.
 
Sophomore Nicole Dominguez finished the day with 16 kills and 15 digs to lead the Spartans both offensively and defensively. Fellow outside hitter Nylah Demps also notched 16 kills between the two matches to finish her first day of collegiate play. 
 
Tampa took its first game against the Chargers of New Haven by set scores of 25-19, 25-10, and 25-13.  Middle blocker tandem Courtney Vogler and Taylor Fosler grounded 6 and 3 kills respectively, while junior right-side hitter Gen Beaumier had 7 kills in the match. 
 
Freshman Melissa Elias ran the Tampa offense against the Chargers, leading the Spartans in assists with 17. Elias also notched three digs and had one service ace in her college debut. Defensively, Fosler led at the net, picking up three blocks while senior outside hitter Shelby Joslin led the team in the back row with 6 digs on the match. 
 
UT fell in their second game to Central Washington University by set scores of 22-25, 27-29, and 19-25.
Freshman Demps once again contributed heavily to the Spartans offense with a team leading 9 kills. Sophomore Sammy Mueller was in command of distribution this match, tallying 25 total assists, in addition to her three digs. Sophomore Courtney Vogler was UT's main defensive weapon, with nine blocks at the net. 
 
CWU was led by outside hitters Maggie McTaggart and Shelby Mauritson who each posted 10 kills on the pins. Additionally, the Wildcats served tough and aced the Spartans on four different occasions. 
 
Day two of the Terrace Hotel Classic will resume tomorrow at 10:30 A.M. with a matchup against Pace University. Following that game, UT will take the court again at 7:00 P.M. against defending national champion Concordia – St. Paul.
