Tampa Volleyball Ends Opening Weekend 2-2.

#TampaVB finishes the weekend 2-2 after splitting on their second day of competition.

TAMPA, Fla. – Concluding the Terrace Hotel Classic, the No. 17 University of Tampa volleyball team split the final day of action on Saturday in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
 
The Spartans defeated Pace University 3-0 before falling to reigning national champion Concordia St.-Paul in a five-set thriller. UT ended the weekend tournament with an even 2-2 overall record.
 
Sophomore Katie McKiel finished the day with 19 kills to lead the Spartans offensively, while fellow sophomore outside hitter Nicole Dominguez ended the day with 16 kills and 16 digs. Dominguez also posted a double-double in the day's final contest against No. 1 Concordia – St. Paul with 12 kills at a .205 clip while adding 15 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Fosler finished the day recording 15 kills at an average .767 percentage. 
 
UT won their first match of the day against Pace University in three sets with scores of 25-15, 25-11, and 25-14. Offensively, the Spartans were led by sophomore Katie McKiel who earned 10 kills against the Setters, hitting at a blistering .714 percentage. Additionally, middle blocker Courtney Randazzo earned four kills hitting .800 in the match. On defense, freshman Kaitlyn Ajmani, junior Marisa Beisner, and senior Molly McAlvany all had five digs. 
 
The underclassman duo, Sammy Mueller and Melissa Elias, guided the Spartans to victory by dishing out 17 and 14 assists respectively. Fellow Tampa rookie, Sorrel Houghton, stood out for UT with seven kills and four digs. 
 
The Concordia- St. Paul Golden Bears dealt the Spartans their second loss of the season with scores of 25-22, 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, and 17-15.
 
Once again, Nicole Dominguez and Taylor Fosler dominated the Spartan's offense with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Dominguez posted her first double-double of the season in the match, also contributing 15 digs in the five set battle. Freshman Kaitlyn Ajmani played libero for the Spartans and came up with nine digs against the Golden Bears, ending the day with a total of 14.  
 
CSP was led by outside hitter Shelby Seurer who hit .469 with 19 kills. Sara Macek also contributed heavily to the offense with 16 kills at a .370 kill percentage. The No. 1 ranked Golden Bears went undefeated in the Terrace Hotel Classic and look to pick up right where they left off last season. 
 
Tampa will continue its season on the road, as the team travels to Denver to play in the Colorado Premier Tournament starting Friday, September 8th. The team's first match will be against No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State, with the No. 14 ranked Ferris State Bulldogs on deck.
