
Volleyball Falls to No. 20 in the AVCA Coaches Poll
Tampa volleyball falls in the AVCA poll three spots after going 2-2 in their opening weekend.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – After splitting its opening weekend 2-2 to start the season, the University of Tampa volleyball team slides to No. 20 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II coaches poll as announced by the association office, Monday.
The Spartans played in the Terrace Hotel Classic to begin their 2017 campaign, taking the first game of the year 3-0 over the University of New Haven. Tampa later faltered its second match of the day in three sets to Central Washington University before splitting day two of the tournament.
The Spartans have been ranked in 284 consecutive polling periods dating back to the 1995 campaign. The record is second only to No. 16 Central Missouri.
Continuing as the No. 1 team in the nation, reigning national champions Concordia, St. Paul with 45 first-place votes. Southwest Minnesota State continues as the No. 2 team, earning three first-place nods. Rounding out the top five is Lewis, Palm Beach Atlantic and Nebraska-Kearney, respectively.
Tampa will continue its season on the road, as the team travels to Denver to play in the Colorado Premier Tournament starting Friday, September 8th. The team's first match will be against No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State, with the No. 8 ranked Ferris State Bulldogs on deck.
