No. 20 Saint Leo Defeats Tampa 3-0

#TampaVB falls to 1-2 in the SSC, after being swept by the Lions of Saint Leo.

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 20 Saint Leo Lions defeated the University of Tampa Spartans three sets to zero in a home contest. The Lions move to 2-1 in SSC play, while the Spartans fall to 1-2. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 | Saint Leo took the first set 25-18. Nicole Dominguez had five kills while libero Kasey Reynolds added four digs. The Lions outhit the Spartans with a team kill percentage of .308 to .130. Saint Leo also used multiple attackers while UT relied heavily on Dominguez and freshman Sorrel Houghton who added two kills. 
Set 2 | After a back and forth battle between the two teams, the Lions came up on top with a set two victory of 25-20. Freshman Kaitlyn Ajmani moved to libero for UT, picking up seven digs in the set. SLU once again out hit UT .214 to .161. Setter Sammy Mueller ended the set with nine assists and two digs, while her opposite, senior Jen Aprile, headed into the third with six assists and four digs. Tampa ended the second set with a slight blocking advantage, as the team recorded four blocks to Saint Leo's three. 
Set 3 | Saint Leo fought for a 25-20 third set behind the attacking efforts of Ashley Quero.  Kasey Reynolds moved back to the libero position for the Spartans with eight digs in the set. Nylah Demps recorded five kills on the set, ending the match with 10 total, hitting .200. Freshman Melissa Elias subbed into UT's rotation ending the match with seven assists and three digs for the Spartans.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
• Dominguez led the team offensively with 12 kills on the night hitting .422, while also contributing five digs. 
• Ajmani ended the match with the Spartans only two service aces. She also posted two assists and nine digs. 
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
• Last season, Saint Leo has won more matches against Tampa than they had in the history of the two programs with two. The regular season sweep marked the first-time Saint Leo had defeated Tampa both at home and on the road. With the Lions victory tonight, they have won the last three matchups between the two schools. 
• Tampa leads the all-time series against the Lions 83-4. 
 
UP NEXT:
Tampa continues their 2017 season with a pair of road matches on Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th against the No. 4 Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish and against the Rollins College Tars respectively. Tampa will not return home until Friday, Oct. 20 where they will host the Nova Southeastern Sharks for a 7 pm. match.
