Spartans Siege the Buccaneers in Five

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The No. 8 University of Tampa Spartans defeats the Barry University Buccaneers in a five-set thriller by set scores of 25-17, 20-25, 26-24, 24-26 and 15-11. Now 8-0 in the SSC, the Spartans remain the only team undefeated in conference competition.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Katie McKiel had an outstanding performance, earning 24 kills on 57 total attempts. McKiel only committed six errors and hit an outstanding .316. Additionally, the Colorado Springs, Colorado native logged 21 digs for UT. Following her efforts, Sorrel Houghton had 17 kills, hitting .111. Melissa Elias also played a key role in Tampa's victory, earning the Spartans first triple-double of the year, ending the match with 11 kills, 17 assists, and 13 digs. Junior Sammy Mueller was one of the two Spartans to earn a double-double. She ended the five-set thriller with 41 assists and 18 digs. Nicole Dominguez suited up as the team's libero ending the night with 33 digs.

INSIDE THE STATS:

• Katie McKiel earned a double-double for UT, ending the night hitting .316 with 24 kills and 21 digs.

• Sammy Mueller also earned a double-double with 41 assists and 18 digs.  

• Sophomore, Melissa Elias earned the Spartans first triple-double of the season. She recorded 11 kills, 17 assists, and 13 digs.  

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
The Spartans lead the all-time series over the Buccaneers 54-16. Tampa has won in the last 19 meetings between the two schools.
