No. 9 Spartans Wrap Up Regular Season With 3-1 Win On Senior Night

TAMPA, Fla. –  A day after clinching the Sunshine State Conference title, the University of Tampa volleyball team records another victory over Embry Riddle on Senior Night. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:   

Final Score: No. 9 University of Tampa Spartans 3 (1: 25-15, 2: 20-25, 3: 25-23, 4: 28-26) Embry-Riddle Eagles 1 

Records: No. 9 Tampa Spartans (28-2, 19-1 SSC), Embry-Riddle (25-6, 15-5 SSC)   

Location: Bob Martinez Athletic Center || Tampa, Fla.    

All-Time Series: Tampa currently holds a sizeable lead in the series against Embry-Riddle, with a lead of 13-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:   

First Set: The Spartans jumped out to an early 8-2 lead against the Eagles. Towards the end of the set, the Spartans held a commanding 19-9 lead forcing the Eagles to call their second timeout. The Spartans would go on to win this set by a score, 25-15. Sorrel Houghton tallied three kills on 16 total attacks. || Score: 1-0 Tampa 

Second Set: The Spartans would open the second set with a 3-1 advantage. Tampa would then trail the Eagles 14-7 midway through the set. The Spartans cut the lead to 21-17 but would fall later in the set, 25-20.

Score: 1-1

Third Set: The Spartans again would jump out to an early 8-3 lead similar to the first set. Tampa would take a timeout late in the set, up 18-16. The Spartans would go on to win this set in a nail bitter, 25-23. Kalli Cors notched five kills in the set. || Score: 2-1 Tampa

Fourth Set: This set would be another close one between both teams. The Spartans would edge out the Eagles 28-26, off a Mackenzie Dufresne kill to win both the set and the match.

INSIDE THE STATS:   

• Melissa Elias and Emily Noe combined for a total 43 assists in the win.
• Claudia Rivera led the game with 31 digs. 
• Kalli Cors led the Spartans in kills, with 13 total.   

UP NEXT: The Spartans wrapped up the 2021 regular season and will compete in the NCAA South Regional Tournament – date and time to be announced later.
