
Chris Catanach Honored as 2023 Lee Roy Selmon Lifetime Achievement Recipient
TAMPA, Fla. - University of Tampa Head Volleyball Coach Chris Catanach has been honored as the 2023 recipient of the Lee Roy Selmon Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Lee Roy Selmon Lifetime Achievement Award is given out annually by the Tampa Bay Sports Commission to an individual that demonstrates a lifetime's worth of incredible support for the Tampa Bay sports community. Previous recipients for this award include some of the likes of Tony Dungy, Tino Martinez, Derrick Brooks, Dick Vitale, and Lee Roy Selmon.
Catanach is a native of the U.S. Virgin Islands and attended school at the University of Tampa. He took over the program when it was just five years old in 1984 and posted a 32-4 record in his first year as a coach.
Catanach has spent 39 years in charge of the Spartan program and has led the team to be one of the elite programs in the country. In his time thus far, Coach Catanach has amassed 28 Sunshine State Conference Championships, 19 NCAA South Regional Championships, and four NCAA National Championships in eight finals appearances. The Spartans have won National Championships in 2006, 2014, 2018, and the latest in 2021 when the Spartans became the first team to win on their home court. Off the court, Coach Catanach has seen his program excel in the classroom. In his time, there have been a total of 12 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and one CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year.
