Tampa Stays Perfect, Opening SSC Play With Win Over Eckerd

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 4 Tampa Spartans earned their first SSC win of the season and remained undefeated against the Eckerd Tritons in a battle of unbeaten teams on Friday.

Final Score: Tampa 3 (1: 25-18, 2: 25-18, 3: 25-17), Eckerd 0

Records: No. 4 Tampa (7-0, 1-0 SSC), Eckerd (7-1, 0-1 SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

First Set: Tampa opened the first set with a 5-1 lead and later stretched that to a 13-6 advantage before Eckerd coach Michelle Piantadosi-Lima called a timeout. Tampa never lost the lead in the set, posting a .367 hitting percentage to Eckerd's .071 mark. Kalli Cors led the team with five kills in the frame. | Score: 25-18 Tampa

Second Set: Tampa trailed for the first time in the contest to begin the set, but quickly overcame a 4-2 deficit with a 6-0 run capped off by five straight errors. The Spartans built up a 17-12 lead and ran away with it late, ending the set on a 7-2 run. | Score: 25-18 Tampa

Third Set: Tampa and Eckerd went back and forth to begin the third set, with neither team taking the lead by multiple points until the Spartans managed a 10-8 advantage. The Spartans still held a two-point lead as Eckerd called a timeout at 14-12 after a long rally ended by a Mackenzie Dufresne kill. The timeout interrupted what would become a 7-1 run and 18-13 lead for Tampa, which allowed the Spartans to pull away and win the match in straight sets. | Score: 25-17 Tampa 

INSIDE THE STATS: 

  • Dufresne and Nathaly Perez recorded double-digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively
  • JJ Ramirez led the Spartans with 18 digs
  • Tampa held Eckerd to a team .094 hitting percentage
