Spartans Sweep South Region Crossover with Big Win vs. No 15 West Florida

Orlando, Fla. – Facing their toughest opponent of the season, the No. 3 Tampa Spartans passed the test of the No. 15 West Florida Argonauts with flying colors to remain perfect at the South Region Crossover.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

First Set: In a matchup of top-15 teams in the final game of the South Region Crossover for both squads, the first set was closely contested throughout and needed to exceed 25 points to decide a winner. West Florida squeaked out to a 7-5 lead that the Spartans just could not overcome. Tampa nearly turned things around late following a second timeout called by head coach Chris Catanach with the Argonauts leading 23-20. The Spartans would take four of the next five points on kills by Kalli Cors and JJ Ramirez plus two West Florida attack errors to tie the set at 24. Kills by Nathaly Perez and Tess Schrenger extended the set before the Argonauts emerged victorious with consecutive points on a kill and attack error. | Score: 28-26 West Florida

Second Set: However, that would be the last that West Florida looked formidable against Tampa for the rest of the match. The Spartans opened the set on a 7-0 run highlighted by three service aces by Zoey Seput and their lead quickly grew to 10 at 12-2. The large advantage Tampa amassed early in the set proved vital, as the two teams played each other even until Jenna Vaske ended the frame with her fifth kill in the set. | Score: 25-15 Tampa

Third Set: The Spartans continued their dominance to take the lead in the match. Tampa won the first four points of the set and later broke things open with a 7-1 run to go up 16-6 before a West Florida timeout. That run was highlighted by more success with service aces as Schrenger recorded three consecutive points via her serve. The Argonauts struggled with the pressure applied by the Spartans as five of the last nine Tampa points to end the set came off errors, including two solo blocks by Perez. | Score: 25-11 Tampa 

Fourth Set: The Spartans made a statement with how they dominated such a highly-ranked team in the last three sets. West Florida kept up with Tampa until about the halfway mark of the set, but the Spartans kicked into high gear leading 13-8 following an Argonauts timeout. In all, Tampa ended the match on a 14-2 run. The Spartans added three more service aces to their total in the set and the last six points of the set belonged to Tampa, highlighted by three kills from Mackenzie Dufresne. | Score: 25-10 Tampa
