No. 3 Tampa Overwhelms Eckerd

St. Petersburg, Fla. – No. 3 Spartans Complete Regular Season Sweep Over Tritons

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

First Set: The Spartans jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the Tritons early in the first set, but after separate 3-0 runs in favor of the home team, Tampa and Eckerd were tied at 10-10. A perfectly placed ace from Kalli Cors gave Tampa the 12-10 lead and some much-needed momentum as they soon found themselves on their own 3-0 run that was interrupted by a timeout from Eckerd. The Spartans added another 3 to their scoring run following the timeout; In total, the 6-0 run saw 4 kills from the Spartans, including 2 from Tess Schrenger, who tallied 5 total in the set. Eckerd's coach, Michelle Piantadosi-Lima, called another timeout as her team fell down 21-14. After conceding a few points to the Tritons, Jenna Davis closed the set out for the Spartans with a strong kill.  | Score: 25-18 Tampa

Second Set: Eckerd came out in the second set with a fast 3-0 lead, but the Spartans responded with 4 straight as Nathaly Perez recorded 2 kills early. The set saw the two teams tied 8 separate times and 5 different changes in the lead. After some early back-and-forth action, Eckerd pulled away a little with a 16-13 lead as Coach Catanach called his first timeout of the evening. Shortly after the timeout, the Spartans scored 4 of 5 which cut the Triton lead to 19-18, who responded with their own timeout. Tampa stayed strong through the break and, again, scored the next 4 of 5, and Eckerd called yet another timeout as they were now trailing 22-20. Perez closed the set out just 5 plays later with a kill, her 5th of the set.   | Score: 25-22 Tampa

Third Set: The Tritons, again, held a quick and early lead over the Spartans, to begin the set, at 5-2 but a 4-0 run, in favor of Tampa, that was made up of 2 kills from Mackenzie Dufresne gave the visitors the early lead at 8-6 and Eckerd responded with an early timeout. Not being able to capitalize from their break, Eckerd soon conceded a 7-2 Tampa run and had to call their second timeout, now down 16-10. The Spartans only allowed the Tritons to score 5 more points in the set and Tampa went on separate 3-0 runs, the second of which ended the set and closed out the evening with another Davis kill.  | Score: 25-15 Tampa
