Christian Calleja solid start for the Spartans, completed the game with 10 strikeouts.

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team defeated the Bridgeport Knights in a mid-week game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Knights were first to score in the top of the first. 
  • Bottom of the third the Spartans battle back with five runs. Cole Perry scored off a RBI from Richie Rivera. Stephen Smith scored off a RBI from Drew Ehrhard. Rivera scored off a RBI from Connor Crile. Crile scored off a RBI from Harrison Bragg.
  • A RBI single from Bragg allowed Crile to score. Spartans lead 6-1. 
  • The Spartans scored five more in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Gali scored off a RBI from Rivera. Smith scored off a RBI from Ehrhard. Bragg homered, 3 RBI; Ehrhard scored; Rivera scored. Chris Gaffney scored off a RBI from Drew Burkhart. 
  • Colton Widdows relieved pitcher Christian Calleja. 
  • Bottom of the seventh Jack Loefflad singled to center field, 2 RBI; Kyle Cotilletta scored; Garrett Back scored. Danny Maynard singled, out at second lf to 2b, RBI; Loefflad scored. The Spartans lead 15-1.
  • Top of the eighth the Knights scored one run. 
  • The Spartans scored the last run of the game in the bottom of the eighth. 
  • Top of the ninth Deaven Phillips relieved pitcher Widdows. 
  • Tampa won 16-2.

INSIDE THE STATS: 

  • Calleja had his third win of the season. 
  • Pitchers tallied fourteen strikeouts. Calleja led the Spartans in strikeouts with ten.
  • Bragg led the Spartans in RBIs with five. 
  • Rivera led the Spartans in hits with three. 
  • Smith, Rivera, Ehrhard and Crile led the Spartans in runs with two each. 
  • Harrison Bragg scored his sixth homerun of the season.
