
Spartans Sweep SSC Swimming Awards as Corredor, Fluck and Kiner Honored
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference is pleased to announce the 2023 men's swimming individual awards. Santiago Corredor, Barnabas Fluck, and Jimi Kiner from the University of Tampa earn Swimmer of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year honors, respectively. It marks the first time the Spartans have swept the SSC men's swimming individual awards.
League coaches vote on the SSC Swimmer, Freshman, and Coach of the Year awards following the NCAA Division II National Championship. All-SSC swimmers were selected earlier this season following the conference championship meet held February 15-19 at the Long Center in Clearwater.
2023 SSC Men's Swimming All-Conference Awards
Corredor, a junior on Tampa's squad, earns Swimmer of the Year honors following his performance at the NCAA championship. He claimed the 400 IM title, was runner-up in the 200 back, and finished third in the 200 IM at the 2023 event. Corredor and teammate Hayden Curley are the first UT swimmers to win an individual national championship since 2009. With Corredor on their side, the Spartans earned a fourth-place finish at the national meet, the program's best finish since 2002.
This year, Corredor set the SSC overall record in the 200 back and 400 IM and the SSC championship records in the 200 back, 400 IM, and 200 fly. The Fort Myers, Florida native was also tabbed the 2023 SSC Swimmer of the Meet following the conference championship. In relays, the Floridian and his teammates now hold the conference's overall and meet records in the 800 free relay and the meet record in the 400 free relay. Corredor joins Brett Saunders (2019-20) as Spartans named SSC Men's Swimmer of the Year.
Fluck is honored as Freshman of the Year following a solid season for the Spartans. The Budapest, Hungary native claimed three Top-8 performances at the NCAA in the 500 Free (7th), 1000 Free (7th), and 1650 Free (8th). Additionally, the First Team All-SSC award winner finished 13th in the 200 free at the national meet. Fluck is the third Spartan to be named Freshman of the Year, joining Brad Hines (2010-11) and Sean Rodney (2016-17)
SSC Records / Top Times | Men's Swimmers and Coaches of the Year
Kiner has been selected SSC Coach of the Year by his peers after leading Tampa's program to a second conference championship in men's swimming. Under Kiner's leadership, nine swimmers and five relay teams earned passage to the NCAA championship, where they finished fourth overall, the best program finish since 2002. Seven Tampa men were named to All-SSC teams, including three first-team honorees, and Tampa's program claimed its second Swimmer of the Meet and Swimmer of the Year honors. This season UT captured the conference's top time in seven events, broke seven SSC meet records and tallied six overall league records. Kiner remains the first UT coach to win the award in men's swimming.
