Spartan Women's Swimming Sweeps Nova While Men Split

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams were on the road on Saturday as they traveled to take on Sunshine State Conference opponent Nova Southeastern University in a pair of meets.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Men's Final (Meet 1): Tampa Spartans 103, Nova Southeastern Sharks 83

Men's Final (Meet 2):  Nova Southeastern Sharks 98.5, Tampa Spartans 87.5

Women's Final (Meet 1): Tampa Spartans 134, Nova Southeastern Sharks 52

Women's Final (Meet 2): Tampa Spartans 109, Nova Southeastern Sharks 77

Location: NSU Aquatic Center | Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first meet totaled 20 events, including 10 for the men and 10 for the women.
  • Tampa's men won five of the events in the first meet.
  • The women won eight out of 10 of their events in the first meet.
  • The second meet also included a total of 20 events.
  • Head coach Jimi Kiner's Spartan squad took first in four men's races and five women's events in the second meet.

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN):

MEET ONE

  • Angelo Russo, Youssef Khowessah, Yigit Saglam, and Yannick Smith won the Men's 400 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 3:17.33.
  • The Spartans claimed the top three spots in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Jared Fitzgerald placed first with a time of 1:40.60. Hugo Bustamante was the runner up with a time of 1:40.64. Ian Morgan finished third with earning a time of 1:41.48.
  • In the men's 50 Yard Freestyle, Mikael Haugen placed second with a time of 21.02 and Smith placed third with a time of 21.20.
  • Grant Ruster took home a first-place finish in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 1:51.88. Daniel Tran placed third with a time of 1:53.14.
  • The top two finishes in the 200 Fly came from the Spartans, led by Thomas Clark with a time of 1:51.96. Freshman Winn Aung was the next to finish after being clocked at 1:52.12.
  • Morgan championed the 1,000 Free as he came in at 9:36.59.

MEET TWO

  • Smith took a first-place tie in the 200 Free as the finish was clocked at 1:42.30 in a battle of All-Americans.
  • Morgan continued his success as he was tops in the 400 IM at 4:06.27.
  • The top three of the 100 Back went to the Spartans as Russo sped to a first-place finish of 49.80. Bustamante was second at 50.49 while Andreas Johnsen followed at 51.64.
  • The 500 Free resulted in another first-place finish from Morgan, this time at 4:38.59. Brian Daugherty was second at 4:41.50.

 

TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN):

MEET ONE

  • Madysen Barnes, Julia Augustsson, Johanna Koether, and Elizaveta Bazarova started off the meet with a win in the Women's 400 Medley Relay, placing with a time of 3:48.06.
  • Tampa swept the 200 Yard Freestyle. Hana van Loock placed first with a time of 1:52.30. Megan Goldthorpe finished second registering a time of 1:53.14. Guiliana Zerpa took third with a time of 1:55.73.
  • Bazarova took first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 24.02. Kristen Wagner was the runner up placing with a time of 24.10.
  • In the Women's 200 Yard IM, Courtney Sherwood placed second with a time of 2:06.75, and Paige Hunt placed third with a time of 2:07.89.
  • The duo of Lindsey Grater and Katie Horan took the top two spots in the 200 Fly with respective times of 2:04.50 and 2:06.14.
  • Van Loock continued her success with another first, this time coming in the 100 Free at 51.57.
  • The 200 Back was dominated by a pair of Spartan freshmen as Lara Wiedemann won with a showing of 2:01.70. Classmate Barnes was next at 2:01.89.
  • UT occupied the top three finishes in the 1,000 Free with Jessie Tobin taking the top spot at 10:16.49. Alexa Turco came in at 10:30.98 followed by Zerpa at 10:41.96.
  • Tampa put a stamp on the victory with a first-place effort in the 400 Free Relay. The team of van Loock, Bazarova, Roma Vrijhof and Goldthorpe won in 3:28.05.

MEET TWO

  • Grater took the first individual race, winning the 200 Free in 1:54.10. She was followed by teammates Vrijhof and Zerpa.
  • Koether led a group of four Spartans in the top four of the 100 Fly, with a winning time of 56.99. Following were Horan, Kristen Wagner and Grater.
  • van Loock claimed the 100 Free in 52.41 while a time of 53.07 from Vrijhof was good for second.
  • Tobin won the 500 Free as the top time was registered at 5:03.58.
