
Spartans Enjoy Strong Start at NCAA Swimming Championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2021 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Thursday, which featured both The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams.
Severe weather caused the finals session originally scheduled for Wednesday evening to instead take place on Thursday morning. This in turn caused all events planned for Thursday to be swam as timed finals.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
- The men's team is tied for 23rd with a total of three points.
- The Women's team is fifth with a total of 119 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The women competed in four of the five finals for the first session.
- The men competed in one event in the second session.
- The women competed in all five events in the second session.
ALL-AMERICAN PERFORMANCES:
- The Women's 200 Medley Relay, consisting of Madysen Barnes, Elizaveta Bazarova, Johanna Koether, and Hana van Loock took sixth place with a time of 1:41.63.
- In the 100 Yard Butterfly, Courtney Sherwood placed sixth with a time of 54.99.
- van Loock placed sixth in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:49.76.
- Barnes, Julia Augustsson, Sherwood, and van Loock made up the Women's 400 Yard Medley Relay and placed sixth with a time of 3:43.13.
HONORABLE MENTION ALL-AMERICAN PERFORMANCES:
- Yesterday, in the Women's 1,000 Yard Freestyle, Jessie Tobin finished with a time of 10:12.80 and Lindsey Grater finished at 10:18.62. The final heat of the event was swam today, which placed Tobin in 12th and Grater in 16th.
- Elizaveta Bazarova placed ninth overall and first in the consolation finals for the Women's 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.39.
- The Women's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, made up of Bazarova, van Loock, Grater, and Koether, finished ninth with a time of 1:34.65.
- Barnes took tenth in the 100 Yard Butterfly finishing at 55.11. Katie Horan finished 16th at 56.02.
- Yigit Saglam earned the first points for the men when he placed 14th in the Men's 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 47.76.
UP NEXT:
The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with trials. Tampa will be represented in the 500 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, and 200 Butterfly. Fans can watch live on NCAA.com and view live results here.
