Tampa Men Capture 2023 SSC Swimming Championship; Spartan Women Second
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The 2023 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships have come to an end after an exciting weekend. The University of Tampa men have been crowned SSC champions for the second time in program history after sitting atop the standings for the entire 5-day event.
The Spartans tallied 935 points to earn the program's second conference title. UT swimmers toppled seven meet records and three conference records.
Tampa's Santiago Corredor wins Swimmer of the Meet honors. Corredor scored 77 points as an individual swimmer during the event. He set the SSC records in the 200 back and 400 IM.
CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL / RESULTS
Top Tampa Performances:
- Hayden Curley took gold to kick off the night for Tampa, setting a new meet record at 15:12.68 in the 1,650 Free. Teammate Barnabas Fluck medaled as the third-place finisher in the event.
- In the women's 1,650 Free, freshman Morgan Wimberly led the Spartans with a sixth-place finish and time of 17:12.3.
- The Women's 100 Free had a second-place finish from Tilde Morin (50.50) as Roma Vrijhof was fifth (50.99) and Emma Chestang sixth (51.23).
- A pair of Spartans were in the top-five of the Men's 100 Free, with Tibor Tistan fourth at 44.22 and Santiago Aguilera fifth at 44.26.
- The Women's 200 Back had Mady Barnes at fourth (1:59.09), Sierra Gillan at fifth (1:59.21) and Kim McCaffrey sixth (2:01.09).
- Corredor shattered the conference and meet record in the 200 Back and also set a school record at 1:43.36. Parker Knollman was third in the event.
- Alli McFarland was fifth in the 200 Breast at 2:19.76 as Julia Augustsson was sixth at 2:20.22.
- The runner-up in the 200 Breast went to UT's Aramis Rivera at 1:58.51 while Jared Mindek was fourth at 2:00.24.
- Tampa's women ended the meet with a new school record in the 400 Free Relay as the group of Tilde Morin, Roma Vrijhof, Emma Chestang and Emily Van De Wiele were timed at 3:21.19.
- Tampa would close out their championship night with a win in the 400 Free Relay at 2:54.98, setting a new meet record. The record team included Tistan, Caleb Brandon, Aguilera and Corredor.
- For the championship, 11 meet, and six conference records were set on the men's side. On the women's side, two NCAA Division II records were broken, eight meet records were set, and four conference records bested. [See More: SSC Records & Top Times]
